Rebuilding lives of Haiti earthquake orphans

Children from Haiti two years after the earthquakeIn the aftermath of the devastating earthquake on 12 January 2010, which killed 220,000 people and left more than one million homeless, SOS Children stepped in to provide emergency relief for children and families most affected. Now, nearly two years on from the disaster, our plans to contribute to Haiti’s long-term recovery are well underway.

SOS Children to construct two new Villages in Haiti

SOS Children plan to open two new SOS Children's Villages to help care for more children in Haiti, in Les Cayes and Croix-de-Bouquets. Together, these two Children's Villages will be able to offer care for almost 300 children. In Les Cayes an accompanying SOS Family Strengthening Programme and school will provide help and education for an extra 700 people.

In the coming months and years, SOS Children will focus on education in Haiti as we believe that improving access to free and good education are necessary first steps towards rebuilding Haiti. We intend to refurbish four state schools across the country.

How you can help

If you are able to help our work, may we ask you to make a small regular donation:

Make a regular donation

We were in Haiti for decades before the earthquake caring for orphans and strengthening families to face calamity. Every day, in 125 countries around the world, we help children whose lives have been damaged by natural disasters, conflict, poverty or disease. We could do so much more with your help. By making a one-off or regular donation you will be part of helping children grow up with the security, love and respect that they need. Thank you.

SOS Children's Villages Haiti

SOS Children has been working in Haiti since 1979. Before the earthquake, more than 4,000 children were supported in our two Villages in Port-au-Prince and Cap Haïtien. However, since the quake, our services have multiplied. In the capital Port-au-Prince alone, 300 unaccompanied children were taken into SOS families and we have managed to reunite more than 150 of them with their own families, who now receive continued support through our SOS Family Strengthening Programmes. SOS Community and Social Centres have been also been expanded, and the SOS School in Santo has doubled its capacity.
